About Us

Welcome to SoCal

Our chapter of SCBWI includes Orange County, San Bernardino, Riverside and Long Beach. We have sunny beaches, snow-capped mountains, award winning wineries and the legendary deserts of Palm Springs; Disneyland and Raging Waters; and most importantly we have some incredible writers and illustrators who gather here for a host of retreats, craft based workshops, and schmoozes. Our goal is to offer small gatherings in unforgettable settings that allow attendees to have one-on-one conversations with speakers and fellow authors and illustrators. If you are just starting out or have a long-standing career you are invited to join us. We're all about making connections!

Some of our annual events include:

Spring Writer's Retreat:

Our annual Spring Writer’s Retreat takes place in early May at the South Coast Winery Resort and Spa in the heart of Temecula’s wine country. Picture yourself strolling along a serene path through a tranquil vineyard surrounded by lush gardens and waterfalls. It is the perfect setting to create memorable characters and winning plots! Speakers include four editors and other publishing professionals. The event begins on Friday evening with a VIP reception at which attendees have the opportunity to sit with two different editors for a chat. Saturday and Sunday are packed with workshops, round table critiques with an editor, first pages and writing activities.

Agent's Day/Editor’s Day:

Agent’s Day and Editor’s Day alternate so that each is held every other year. They take place in October and are filled with opportunities to connect with four outstanding agents and editors at the Titan Student Union Theater on the campus of Cal State University in Fullerton. Agent’s Day includes ?insider tips from speakers, ?manuscript critiques, First Pages panels, and a Round Robin Speed Chat with the agents. Editor’s Day offers presentations by four editors, portfolio reviews by an art director, pitches, manuscript critiques, dummy critiques, First Pages panels including editors and agents, contests, and a chance to have lunch with an editor or agent.
